Abrasion wear is an extensive problem for stainless steels.
In the on-going effort to increase the knowledgebase on abrasion, Expanite requested Bud Labs to measure the dry abrasion characteristics of untreated and Expanite treated samples of austenitic AISI316L using the ASTM G 65 Procedure.

Unprecedented Galling Resistance of 316L after Expanite Surface Hardening
Galling, or adhesive wear, is a pervasive problem for stainless steels, of which the soft 300 series are notoriously prone. In an on-going effort to increase its database of engineering data, Expanite recently conducted the ASTM G98 Standard Test Method for Galling Resistance of Materials on AISI 316L, with and without Expanite surface treatment. The results were remarkable, and challenge the conventional wisdom that a 'hardness differential' in a material couple is required to resist galling.

Expanite establishes a subsidiary in the US and opens a new treatment center in Ohio
Since the opening of the 6500 ft2 production-, laboratory- and test center in Hillerød, Denmark, in 2013, Expanite has been experiencing rapid growth in the European markets.
During 2015, we have seen a significant number of new customers in the USA and Canada, and it has therefore been natural to establish a subsidiary – Expanite Inc. – and at the same time open a new treatment center in Ohio.
Expanite can now offer its North American customers the same superior gaseous surface hardening treatment options as in Europe.
Expanite is also expanding its presence in North America by welcoming Christian Dalton as new North American Sales Manager. Christian Dalton has a Ph.D. in Material Science and Engineering from Case Western Reserve University.

Technical Info: Exceptional wear test results on Expanite treated parts
Test: ASTM G133 wear test were performed on AISI 316 stainless steel with and without “SuperExpanite” surface hardening treatment.
Main result: The effect of “SuperExpanite” treatment clearly enhances wear performance in opposition to non-treated sample for ASTM G133 standard conditions. The difference is about 125 times less wear on treated plane surface.

New datasheet: Expanite processes and Austenitic stainless steel alloy
Expanite has started the process of making datasheets for each alloy that can be treated with an Expanite process.
The individual datasheet will describe which Expanite processes are applicable to the particular alloy, and what results - in terms of surface hardness, wear proporties, corrosion characteristics etc. - can be obtained.

Third aniversary of the on-site production at SSP in Ohio, USA
One of the advantages of the Expanite process is, that it can be implemented on-site at the customer. The customer purchases the relevant ovens based on their needs and Expanite guidance, and Expnaite then supplies the process. This means extremely fast turnaround (day-to-day), as there is no transporting of goods.
One of these on-site installations are at SSP in Ohio, USA. In February 2015, this particular installation celebrated 3 years of use. During this time, the installation has treated over 170 batches of up to 35.000 pieces per batch.
In order to ensure the quality of the treated items, the process is monitored 24/7 by Expanite. This means that process deviations are caught and handled immediately.
If you today are using Hard Chromium Plating as your surface hardening process, you might want to consider the SuperExpanite process for the following reasons:
- Increased surface hardness: The SuperExpanite process increase the surface hardness to 1200Hv – app. 30% more than Hard Chromium Plating.
- Reduction in treatment cost: Not only is the SuperExpanite process faster because the treated parts do not need any post-processing before going into production. But the process in itself is also cheaper, resulting in a more cost efficient process than Hard Chromium Plating.
- Increased lifetime: Hard Chromium Plating is a coating, and the plating has a different thermal expansion coefficient than the underlying material. The plating and the underlying material will therefore expand differently when the temperature changes. The plating may therefore crack after some time, resulting in parts of the plating being removed. This will reduce surface hardness and reduce corrosion resistance. Because SuperExpanite is a diffusion process, the hardened surface does not grow on top of the treated item, but is diffused into the outer layers. The result is, that the thermal expansion coefficient is the same throughout the item, and cracks in the surface due to temperature changes will not appear. This prolongs the lifetime of the item.
- Remove Hexavalent Chrome from the surface hardening process: The Hard Chromium Plating process releases Hexavalent Chrome, which is very environmentally unfriendly, and the process is therefore going to be phased out due to new regulations.

TECHNICAL INFO: ExpaniteHigh-T treatment of Martensitic (X65Cr13/420D) valve plate
The treatment of a Martensitic valve plate using an ExpaniteHigh-T process results in a dramatic increase in hardness of the material compared to a nomal hardening.
As seen in the hardness profile, using the ExpaniteHigh-T process results in an averages hardness of 920 HV0.05 (67HRC). Using normal hardening, app. 750 HV0.05 (60HRD) can be obtained.
This means, that you can replace your ordinary heat treatment by an ExpaniteHigh-T process and not only get the heat treatment needed but also a much harder material as a result for almost the same cost per treatment.
